#2 No-Sew DIY Dress-ups! It’s Clown . . . no-o-o, it’s Funny Dog!
One year, our son was to dress up as a clown. This was an actual school assignment: Come dressed as a clown.
He’d agree to be a clown, but he wanted to be a dog dressed as a clown.
“I don’t wanna be a clown. I wanna be a dog.”
“Could you be a doggy clown?”
“Okay, I’ll be Funny Dog. Like Mighty Mouse, but funny.”
(Sheesh.)
Same principle from the Parrot dress-up of using store-bought clothing as a foundation, then adding all of the trimmings to make it into the required dress-up character. And sewing is still optional. You could attach all of the trims with safety pins, glue, or even staples. For me, a small whip stitch is easiest.
Clown Supplies:
- Black t-shirt
- Fake fur squares
- Pom Pom balls
- Ribbon
- Fake flowers
- Sun Visor
We used a black t-shirt this time and subbed in fake fur squares for the felt squares.
I cut brown, white, and black fake fur into random shapes for dog hair spots and whip stitched them to the black t-shirt. I cut one white fur square in a tie shape to hang down the front with two green pom poms and made a green bow tie from ribbon.
I cut two floppy fur ears, then glued them and four daisies to a plastic sun visor. He wore a baseball hat on his head because his head was too small for the plastic sun visor. The visor fit on top of the hat. I wrote his name in puffy paint on the visor.
Those pink shoes are the same ones his big sister wore when she was a parrot.
Party City had a bag of 4 noses for sale: pig, dog, bird, and something else. This second grader is now 26 years old. It’s been a while.
Until next time. Be sweet.
